Mixed Tape Monday: Sleep, Diets and if you see my Mom, wish her happy birthday
I'm typing this post in front of a roaring fire in a cabin near Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
It's June 5th, but I'm wearing sweatpants, a hoodie, beanie, and seven blankets. When I moved to Maine, the joke was that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.
Turns out that's not a joke. That's the weather forecast.
Before I get too far into my post, I'd like to wish a very happy 21st birthday to my Mom. If you see Rita Lloyd at the grocery store this week, go ahead and offer to by her her first legal alcoholic beverage.
She doesn't actually drink, so it really is her first alcoholic beverage. Although I thought I saw her taste a screwdriver once. When I was seven.
Here's another great post from Brad Dieter, whom I linked to a few weeks ago. In this post, he addresses the goal that most of us have for working out; to gain more muscle and lose more fat. And in this post, he highlights perhaps one of the most common mistakes people make when embarking on a new nutrition approach; eating too few calories.
That's right. Too few.
While cutting calories will promote fat loss, that same approach will also result in reduced lean mass.
Busting the myth of lactic acid
My friend Steph Rondeau, who maintains the site "I Train Therefore I Eat" recently wrote an epic post on the myth of chasing lactic acid out of your body following a high intensity workout. I've even heard announcers discussing the need to get lactic acid out of the body at the most recent summer Olympics. Steph offers an excellent in depth post on why this is basically b.s. and you don't have to worry about it.
No your junior high track coach didn't lie to you. He just didn't know his science.
Does losing sleep really impact your waist line?
Yes, I'm actually doing a thing where I feature my own blog post here. I've been spending time researching sleep for my own benefit, and the end result was a two part post on sleep.
