When the New Year Really Begins...
Happy 2024.
I don't know about you, but I've been more than ready to turn the page on 2023. In a lot of ways, it was an amazing year. My decision to go into business for myself meant that I could be in Pennsylvania with my parents more often, that I could attend concerts and sporting events for my niece and nephew, and I was able to do working trips to California, Texas, and Tennessee.
It also meant that I could continue to work while I underwent chemo. So despite ending the year having spent almost 50 days in the hospital (after never having been in the hospital...), I had some amazing experiences.
Culminating with my second Steelers' game ever, in which they actually played well and won and I got to spend the day with my baby brother.
In general, I don't feel like the New Year really begins on January 1st. Most of us have stayed up later than normal (I'm a fan of being in bed by 9:30), we've been eating differently for the past week (or month), and we've spent the week between Christmas and New Year's wondering what day it is.
So by the time January 1st rolls around, we're sleeping in, watching a full day of college football and just generally recovering from the past month, or in my case, the past five months.
Which means that January 2nd feels like a Monday, and we're just getting back into the swing of working, so the focus is on getting through the day. Based on that logic, today is really the first day of the new year.
So Happy New Year, as of January 3rd.
I've never been a fan of resolutions, or the idea of a new year, new you. Mostly because I think, even if I don't know you, that the old you is just fine. You maybe just want to make some tweaks and lean into your strengths a little more.
If I had one suggestion for you to start the new year, it would be to create a vision board/book. (If you live with a lot of people, you might not want your vision hanging out for everyone to see, so a book might feel better). I've been doing vision boards since 2020 and they have made a world of difference in the pursuit of the life I want to live.
If you want a little guidance about how to go about creating your vision board, you can check out this video here. I base my vision on how I want to feel, and then create actions from there. So for instance:
I want to feel strong - so my goal is to average three workouts strength workouts per week following a program I purchased from a fellow coach (coaches shouldn't write their own programs...because if we do, we deliberately avoid things like side planks...)
I want to feel nutritionally balanced - so my goal is to return to a 16/8 Intermittent Fasting schedule during the week. IF isn't for everyone, but it works well for me and I feel good when I do it.
I want to feel helpful and useful, so I'm going to open five spots in my 1:1 coaching program and offer more workshops (let me know if you're interested in the 1:1 coaching). I also have my second book coming out (it's heading to my editor in February, so I'm holding myself to the fire to get it done).
What are your intentions?
